6 Ways To Make The Last Day Of School Special For Your Child

“Schools Out for Summer!”

Yes, we are in the middle of a pandemic, but that is no reason to let your little one’s milestone from preschool or kindergarten pass by the wayside. In light of fear and isolation, we should as parents take the opportunity to bring the joy into our kids lives, even though it feels like the world is doing the complete opposite.

Remember this momentous occasion for you and your little one in these unique ways below.

  • Enjoy the school spirit
  • Bring the fun outdoors
  • Take pictures, yes mom that means with you in them too…
  • Make it a lunch date
  • Celebrate with a treat
  • Talk it out
  1. Enjoy the school spirit

By now, I am sure your schools are coming up with creative ways to connect with students to commemorate the end of the year. So go for it (with caution, of course) and participate! London’s teacher hosted a drive by “grab and go” parade to collect all of their classroom projects, books and pictures. It made her day feel so special. Although out of the ordinary, for London just the mere sight of her teacher lit her up inside, and made her so excited about going back to school again.

2. Bring the fun outdoors

Always stop and smell the flowers

Are your littles catching cabin fever too? Take a moment to get some sun and enjoy the outdoors. Color and wonder makes the imagination grow, especially in my little girl. Call it a photo mad dash, but while we were waiting for a to-go order of food at Las Vegas’ Downtown Summerlin Open Air Mall, we hopped out of the car to snap a few flicks in front of the green flower bike at MTO Cafe. As you can see London felt inspired to smell the beautiful faux flowers (haha).

She loved this bike

3. Take pictures, yes mom that means with you in them too…

Mommy and Me

Its all about the memories right. So snap that picture. Moms, so often we find ourselves behind the camera and seldom in front. Take this opportunity (no make-up, who cares) be in the “mom”ent and get that photoshoot on and poppin! Your child will enjoy the memories later and you will be happy you did too. Heck-we are making pandemic history- so get in that pic parents!

4. Make it a lunch date

You know that place you don’t always get a chance to go to, because well- life gets busy, but your child loves it and eats ALL their food… Go there (for pick-up). Our place or should I say London’s favorite place is now Shake Shack; with an easy mobile app order and a drive up pick up spot. We were able to indulge in a fun lunch date with the best tasting burgers. Good food always accompany’s grand celebrations. So make it a good one.

The Infamous Slap Shot Burger… yum!

5. Celebrate with a treat

London in Cookies and Cream heaven

A well deserved sweet treat makes any occasion a party! Whether a fun and pretty cupcake or a warm glazed doughnut (Krispy Kreme anyone?)- you know the goods they love so make it happen. In London’s case, what’s a burger without a shake?? Cookies and Cream to be exact! She was in heaven! Can you tell?

6. Talk it out

In all the fun, keep the dialogue going. Talk to your child and tell them why we are celebrating and how proud you are of them. Reassure them with God’s word, that everything will be okay and brighter days will come. Encourage their excitement for the new year ahead and acknowledge how much they have grown in the past year. Read a book, look at older art projects and worksheets and show off their efforts and growth over the year (Fridge/Kitchen Art Gallery, maybe?). Don’t forget to listen, you just might be surprised at how amazing they understand whats going on around them.

And when all that is done… Rest assured. Pat yourself on the back, because you too Moms and Dads did a great job this school year too.

These tips and many more can apply to students of all ages, so go ahead and spread some joy.
